Services
Centers
offer a different "menu" of services, depending on the needs expressed
by the community they serve. Listed Below are services offered that can
be essential to the community.
- Information and
Referral - Centers generally maintain information files on availability
in their communities of accessible housing, transportation, employment
opportunities, rosters of persons available to serve as personal care
attendants, interpreters for the hearing impaired, or readers for the
visually impaired, as well as many other services.
- Independent Living
Skills Training - Centers provide training courses to help people with
disabilities gain skills that would enable them to live more independently;
courses may include using various public transportation systems, managing
a personal budget, dealing with insensitive and discriminatory behavior
by members of the general public and many other subjects.
- Advocacy - Centers
generally provide consumer advocacy to help persons with disabilities
obtaining support services. Centers also initiate changes to make life
in the community easier for all persons with disabilities.
- Other Services
- Centers offer other services depending on the specific needs of their
community. These services may include community education, public information
services, equipment repair, social activities and home modifications.
