Each year, 11,000 Americans from every age group and every social demographic are paralyzed by spinal cord trauma and disease. Other conditions of the central nervous system such as spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, and tumors know no prejudice and also result in permanent paralysis.
On October 12, 2008, I will be running 26.2 miles in Bank of America Chicago Marathon as a member of the Marathon Team, a group of individuals dedicated to raising funds for the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Illinois (SCIA). I’m asking you to join me in this effort to help improve the lives of people when spinal cord injury happens. Along with many other programs, the funds raised will aid in further developing the SCIA Resource Center, to run a peer-counseling program, and to help educate school students about simple precautionary measures that will reduce risk of both brain and spinal cord injuries.
Running the marathon will be a great personal challenge for me. Knowing that my family and friends have given me their encouragement through contributions to SCIA in support of my run will make every step toward the finish line a little easier. As I run, I’ll remember your kindness in sponsoring me. I’ll also remember that as great as my race day challenge, is, it cannot compare to the challenges that people with spinal cord injury face every day.
